Clean Beauty - Is Your Foundation Toxic?

By now you probably know that most days I’m a little neurotic about the quality of the food and what goes into my body organics, minimal dairy, minimal gluten, no chemicals, no artificial sweeteners its what makes me feel good so I do it. {If you’re new around here, welcome!}

For the longest time I didn’t even give what I was also putting ON my body. Makeup, moisturizers, hair color, sunscreens and even diaper creams can have a whole host of toxic chemicals that can disrupt hormones in our bodies, be toxic for our organs, carcinogens (or cancer promoting compounds) and some chemicals can even cause birth defects! Its scary and most people have zero clue. So yes I now fork over the extra $5 bucks to get a cleaner label. In my mind its worth avoiding the risk of exposure to whatever the heck is in the rest of the products!

That being said here are some cold hard facts:

  • Only 3 chemicals are banned in the US.

  • Most chemicals are only tested for a few weeks before getting released into the market.

  • Babies umbilical cords have been tested positive for 250+ different chemicals.

  • And lets be real there is no way to test how all these thousands of chemicals interact with one another!

  • We slather on those phthalates not realizing they have been linked with birth defects!

So now you know and now you have a choice. Keep on layering on the toxic crap or start cleaning up your act. Start with educating yourself about what you’ve got going on in your makeup bag. The EWG’s Healthy Living App is one of my favorite ways to check the makeup and brands I’m using!

I’ve also included clean products below that I’ve personally tested and love! I’ve included the EWG’s rating (I personally aim for products with a rating less than 2)! Beware that even products within the same brand may contain not so great ingredients! So if you’re buying face lotion from a brand I recommended shampoo remember to do your own research before assuming all products were created equal. Check that EWG rating.
