Brain Fuel

Having suffered from big-time brain fog a few years back keeping my brain clear, energy high and cylinders firing at full capacity has become incredibly important to me especially in the work I do now. For those of you that don’t know my story, two or three years ago I was struggling with my health. I would leave work at the end of the day an literally be in a fog, my speech was slurred and I had an annoying habit of forgetting everything people told me. If you’re like I am now or a fellow entrepreneurs here are a few hacks {in addition to getting my gut in check} that have been seriously helping me live a more radiant & clear life.

I’ll start by sharing my morning rituals and things you can easily build into your daily practices to start your day off a little less foggy.

#1 - Ditch the Snooze: No, it wasn’t easy but after listening to Mel Robbin’s The 5 Second Rule {best if you hear her on audible} I realized that by snoozing I was sending myself into another sleep cycle, waking up mid-cycle was leaving me in a total fog. Ditched the snooze, ditched that morning fog. If cold turkey ditching the snooze is tough this is what I’ve got for you. First put your alarm outside of your room or at the other end of your room so you have to physically get up. Next straight to your kitchen and get a tall glass of water, if you're super tired maybe jump around a bit & toss on some good tunes!

#2 - Hydrate: Dehydration can lead to fatigue, low energy and brain fog for me waking up with a big 32 oz mason jar of water is a must.

#3 - Move. Getting the blood flowing will allow our brains to be extra perky. When you exercise 20% of the body’s blood and oxygen flow to your brain! Cardio is especially effective for this but I also enjoy yoga poses that place the head below the heart which can speed the process along as well!

#4 - Breath Work. Certain breathing techniques will increase oxygen to the brain and leave you feeling all sorts of high vibe. I like Tony Robbin’s morning priming exercise.

#5 - Cold Showers: Ugh this is not my favorite. I fail at turning that nice warm shower into a shockingly cold one but at the end of the day the benefits outweigh the 30 seconds of misery. Seriously cold showers have been shown to improve circulation, decrease inflammation and increase endorphins.

#6 - Adaptogens. I am obsessed with Four Sigmatic’s coffee & have been using adaptogens in different forms for about 2 years. Adaptogens help buffer our stress response, increase focus, creativity and have been used for thousands of years for this reason. Pssst if you want to try them shoot me a message because if I refer you we both get $10 off our next purchase boo-yah!

#7 - Royal Bee Jelly: While I don’t use it daily I like to add a half vial of Beekeeper’s Natural Royal Jelly {PS this link will get you $10 off your first purchase} into my Four Sigmatic coffee on days when I’m in need of a little extra brain juice! I do this on days I record podcast episodes! This jelly is high in acetylcholine a neurotransmitter found in the brain, spinal cord, and throughout the nervous system, which helps to regulate memory and transmit nerve messages from cell to cell.

#8 - Nutrition: I can 100% feel the difference between the days when I skimp on my veggies or am loaded up on all the nourishing goods & of course theres a reason for that. More on this below but I always try to start my day with some celery juice, eggs, avocado & veggies, a shot of apple cider vinegar and more aqua.

Nutrition:

  • Choline: is an important micronutrient that your body uses to create acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and memory. This lovely nutrient is found in eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, salmon, cod & liver.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: important for brain development at all stages of life omega-3 fats may improve memory and are preventative for cognitive decline as we age. Increase your intake of cold water fatty fish like sardines, salmon, mackerel & herring.

  • Vitamin K: has been shown to improve memory. Vitamin K can be found in leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and spinach.

  • Turmeric or curcumin: May benefit memory and help new brain cells grow! I love making bullet-proof turmeric coffee: Heat 10 oz water & place in blender with 1 serving Four Sigmatic lion’s mane coffee {regular coffee will work too!}, 2 teaspoons coconut oil, a few dashes turmeric. Blend and enjoy your golden coffee.

  • Blueberries: The antioxidants in blueberries have been shown to help improve communication between brain cells, decrease inflammation which can lead to brain fog and decrease risk of alzhiemer’s disease.

  • Green Tea: Contains l-theonine which can increase alpha brain waves!

  • B- Vitamins: If you’re constantly hitting that 3 pm slump or are tired and foggy all the time you may be low in B vitamins! We burn through these bad boys under stress & with alcohol consumption.

If you’ve found yourself in a mid-day slump there are plenty of things you can do to pull yourself out of it! Here are a few of my favorites to up the energy and get the brain firing at full capacity yet again:

  • Peppermint Oil: I dab a drop onto my finger tips and place the oil on the back of my neck and temples to perk me up!

  • Handstands: Remember how I said there are certain yoga poses that will get the blood flowing down to the brain. Well you can take a major shortcut on the yoga and go straight for the headstand. They may look silly but they fun and work every time!

  • Dance Party: Not only will jumping around your office get the blood flowing but having fun and taking breaks can actually increase your creativity & productivity!

  • Get Present: My dear, if you’re constantly feeling drained maybe its time to look at where all of your brain energy is going. If you’re thoughts are constantly on your ex, your money, the future or anything other than the present moment you’re leaking energy all over the place. Maybe its time to start that meditation practice and get yourself into the present moment.

  • Breathe: Notice how you’re breathing are your breaths shallow and coming from your chest? Or are they deep belly breaths? Maximize your oxygen intake and make sure you’re breathing from your belly. You can also do a few rounds of Tony’s priming exercise to up the oxygen more quickly.

  • Organize Your Space: Having a chaotic living space is another way to drain your energy or make your thoughts more chaotic, just clean that shit up love.

  • Sleep: Last be not least & for the love if you’re not doing this as your first line therapy for brain power you’ve gotta start sleeping! Like 7-8 hours a night beauty! Its time.

As always if this blog post was helpful for you help a sister serve more beauties like yourself & share it with your BFF, on your IG story or Facebook feed.
